On How It All Connects
Qaeda’s Zawahri says Palestinian elections futile (Reuters)
Reuters Reports - Al Qaeda’s second-in-command Ayman al-Zawahri said in a video tape aired on Wednesday that Palestinian elections would not free Palestinian land and would deal a blow to holy war against Israeli occupation.
I have a problem with the principle of it all. On the one hand do we have a community beleaguered by decades of war, struggling to establish itself in the international arena, and on the very same hand do we find groups of individuals claiming to share their faith but denouncing their efforts outright. The Palestinian elections are no doubt a complex machine. With Hamas and Fatah butting heads like bumper cars, this latest step for referendum by Abbas is definitely a page out of the sleazy politicians handbook, but like any and all elections the votes must be cast and counted. Whether the vote for Palestinian statehood should come at the cost of accepting Israel is a difficult choice indeed, but why not let the Palestinians make it?
Zawahri calling for Jihad and explicitly stating
“Any path other than jihad will only lead us to loss and defeat,”
is so far off the Richter scale I don’t even know how to address it. Part of the problem of being a practicing (read: practicing not moderate) Muslim is the marked disbelief when you hear bold statements like these by groups that really should know more about Islam. I’m definitely not a scholar, but I can venture without fear into disbanding any stereotypes about “Jihad”–if we can call it that–being legitimate under such circumstances. One has but to go to the Wikipedia to understand how Jihad, particularly in the face of aggression, may not be called for when no Islamic state exists. Zawahri you ought to be ashamed of yourself.
Blair urges bold action against “extremism” in Iran (Reuters)
Reuters- British Prime Minister Tony Blair urged world leaders on Wednesday to be bolder in supporting leading moderates against “forces of extremism” in Iran and elsewhere and in advancing Israeli-Palestinian peacemaking.
Mr. Blair of course isn’t that much better. Despite a failed foreign policy and a dismal war in Iraq, the British PM actually persists in spinning fairytales to the masses. From the Reuters website:
“‘We should stop buying into this wretched culture of blaming ourselves,’ he told business leaders in Dubai. ‘If our policy has a fault, it is that we are too shy of acting boldly to bring about change, to give succor to those trying to live for the better.’”
Have you honestly ever heard such garbage? If a society that demands transparency and truth from its leaders is “wretched” then you may as well bill me for a side of fries and a hamburger, because I am throwing in the towel Mr. Blair. You do a better job of lying than I could ever hope to do as an attorney.
What concerns me most is this “too shy of acting boldly” verbiage that sounds like a scratched track from one of Bush Jr’s diatribes. If you’re a failed politician with not an ounce of respect to your name, on your way out and definitely not graduating with honors, then I can understand the motivation for being in denial, but asking that we do it all over again? I’m speechless.
