Senator ClintonFor years I’ve been sitting on the sidelines, my eyes glued to the television screen like bees to honey, on election day.

I stood patiently by and watched as President Bush essentially stole an election from the very capable Mr. Gore in 2000. I very nearly cried when he retook the helm in 2004, despite a dismal post 9/11 policy that had damaged America’s reputation abroad and resulted in the senseless killing of thousands upon thousands of innocents.

But today I rejoice. The latest polls are indicating the Democrats have taken back the House of Representatives and might be poised to take back the Senate also.

Prior to this election the Democrats had 202 Representatives and the Republicans had 232. The latest polls as of 12:30 PM EST indicate the Democrats have 198 Representatives and the Republicans only 158. There is still room for swings in the Senate where four key races do remain in the election, but it is clear that at least in the House of Representatives the Democrats are back in control after more than a decade!

For those of you that are interested, the remaining four races are in Virginia, Missouri, Tennassee and Montana. The Democrats need to win 3 of the 4 states to retain a majority there, because Vice President Dick Cheney, who is obviously a Republican, holds the tie-breaking vote in the Senate.

In the Governership races the Democrats now also have a majority of Governors in this country, with 28 Governors.

My prayers are with the Democrats, for an end to the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, and the misshapen “War on Terror.” They are for a fresh start and a new take on the broken U.S. Foreign Policy, and some much-needed accountability of leaders who have wrangled our Constitution, civil rights and civil liberties.

With the night still young and so much at stake, all I can say is “Go Democrats!”
